Description of Process for this Submission
At the start of the pandemic, I started a weekly newspaper composed from hand-set type. The "stories" were submitted by the public, and were restricted to 10 words or less. These newspapers were then mailed to subscribers to build connection during quarantine. The format for the issues varied widely, as they documented the incredible social upheaval of 2020/2021. Inspirations were drawn from 19th century artistic printing, to modern infographics, art deco signage, and mid-century advertisements. My submission is for the project as a whole, but I am including some highlight issues for consideration. They include the traditional format of the newspaper, composed predominantly of standard lines of type, as well as issues where intricate compositions of type, ornaments and brass rule were used to visually depict the events of the day.
